Obsidian
OBSIDIAN | Redeeming the dark.
FAQ’S
Q: How does Obsidian fit into the Quill & Flame Publishing House?
A. Obsidian publishes spine-tingling science fiction, horror, and fantasy that redeems the dark. Quill and Flame’s other imprints focus on romance of all types, but romance isn’t necessary for Obsidian titles.
Q. How did Obsidian come to be?
A. L.G. McCary grew up reading Frank Peretti, and as an adult she discovered Michael Crichton, Stephen King, and Billy Coffey. She went looking for more books with darker themes and spine-chilling concepts, but many popular titles gave her more nausea than chills. Obsidian is designed to fill a gap in the market for readers who love creepy stories but want to avoid sexual content, excessive language, and extreme gore.
Q. What are some comparable titles for stories Obsidian is looking to acquire?
A. Obsidian is looking for spooky stories in a variety of settings: contemporary, futuristic, and fantasy. Some of the books on this list include content Obsidian will not publish, but they are great examples of the vibes we’re looking for.
Contemporary:
Prophet, The Visitation, This Present Darkness, Piercing the Darkness, and The Oath by Frank Peretti
Comes a Horseman by Robert Liparulo
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
When Mockingbirds Sing and In the Heart of the Dark Wood by Billy Coffey
Futuristic:
The Silo series by Hugh Howey
Dark Matter and Recursion by Blake Crouch
Alive by Scott Sigler
World War Z by Max Brooks
Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis
The Andromeda Strain, Congo, and The Terminal Man by Michael Crichton
All Our Yesterdays by Cristin Terrill
Fantasy:
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria Schwab
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke
Q: When and where will Obsidian accept submissions?
A. During any regular open submissions or micro-submissions windows for Q&F, Obsidian will also be open to agented or unagented queries. As with Q&F, agented queries are accepted at any time. And, wherever Quill & Flame is present at conferences, either virtual or in-person (such as Realm Makers) our team will accept submissions for our Obsidian imprint. We will look at any genre, all the way from speculative to contemporary, and our submission requirements are detailed on our website. Read more by clicking here.
